Notes on the standard cost field:
-
Standard cost in SedonaOffice is set in the part edit screen on the warehouses tab.
-
It rounds to 4 decimal places, which can be useful when valuing parts such as wire.
-
If the standard cost is updated and does not error, but also does not accept the change, this is an indication that a physical inventory is open for the warehouse, and you must wait to make the change until the physical inventory is closed.
-
Standard cost cannot be updated by the parts updater, because this cost is used to calculate general ledger entries that track the value of parts in your warehouse. If we allowed the cost to be edited by the parts updater, then the general ledger would not be able to appropriately capture value changes made that way.
-
Once a part has activity, the costing method on the part cannot be changed. If you want to switch a part from average to standard costing or vice versa, you must inactivate the existing part and make a new one with the new costing method.
-
The standard cost is often confused with the purchase cost of the part. These two are not the same. The purchase cost is the amount paid to the vendor for the part, the standard cost is what value the part has in inventory. These two should be very similar but are not necessarily exactly the same.
