How to View MEW (Monitoring Equivalency Weighting) Numbers

MEW Numbers

MEW numbers, or the Monitoring Equivalency Weighting numbers, are required for recent changes to UL requirements.

These numbers are used by the UL to determine the minimum requirements for the Central Station they apply to.

As far as the UL is concerned for these numbers, there are three types of customers to be counted:

  1. Residential Customers
  2. Commercial Customers with Open/Close Supervision (UL calls these Commercial Inactive)
  3. Commercial Customers without Open/Close Supervision (UL calls these Commercial Inactive)

Because these numbers are weighted (hence the name), Manitou counts how many customers there are in each category, then multiplies that number by the UL prescribed weighting value.

Commercial Inactive customers (those without O/C supervision), have a weight of 1, so the count of those customers will be multiplied by 1.

Commercial Active customers (those WITH O/C Supervision), have a weight of 3, so the count of those customers will be multiplied by 3.

Residential Customers have a weight of 1/3, so the count of those customers will be multiplied by .333

To understand how these numbers are calculated, please consider the following chart:

Type of Customer Count Multiplier MEW Value
Commercial with O/C 10 3 30
Commercial without O/C 10 1 10
Residential 10 .333 3.33
MEW Number for UL --> 43.33
